The only
character in this story who deserves genuine forgiveness is Dave. Dave was
raped as a child while his friends did nothing to help. From that moment on,
Dave was never the same. He transformed his pain into something greater. He did
not want to see other kids get molested the way he did. To stop this, it
required him to murder a pedophile which leads to him being wrongly accused of
the death of Katie. The price he paid for this misunderstanding was his
life. Dave was nothing more than a damaged human being who did not want to see others hurt the way he was. Although he seemed shady, Dave was a good man.

Mystic River
Mystic River is a movie with a series of unfortunate
events all stemming from mistakes made by the characters. Dave is left
emotionally damaged from a molestation during childhood and seems borderline
insane to the people around him. Jimmy just lost his most loved daughter and
has no other prime suspect but Dave. In Jimmy's eyes, killing Dave seems like a
very rational way to cope with Katie's murder. With further inspection, Jimmy
is no stranger to getting his hands dirty as he murdered his former crime partner
for snitching. This reveals a much darker side of Jimmy in which he has
no relation to the word innocence. As for Sean, he clearly finds out that Jimmy
wrongly murdered Dave for a crime Dave did not commit. Sean chooses to conceal
his evidence and let Jimmy walk free. Therefore, Sean is just as guilty as
Jimmy is.

Your response to this question was excellent. Comparing it with a series of unfortunate event is the exact description of this movie. Also I like how you not only accused Jimmy as being guilty but Sean also because many people will oversee that because of his job as a detective.
ReplyDeleteI like how you suggest Jimmy killed Dave as a way to cope with the grief of Katie's death. He may not have been 100 percent sure Dave killed her, but he needed a way out of all the anguish he was feeling. Also, Sean and Jimmy are both guilty of a crime at the end of the story, just as they were guilty of watching Dave get into the car when they were kids.
